HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is a Department of the British Government primarily responsible for the assessment and collection of taxes and payment of tax credits. It was formed in April 2005, following the merger of the Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise. In 2009, HMRC collected net tax receipts in excess of £400 billion.

HMRC spends £2.2 billion each year – and purchases everything from standard office supplies and printing services, to industrial truck scanners and ships, and even dogs for customs work. The procurement organisation’s goals align with those of the broader Department: to continuously improve efficiency and effectiveness.

The organisation strives to make the Commercial Directorate a “Centre of Excellence” within government – while the Directorate aims to evolve into a leading-edge procurement organisation with a focus on adding value by embracing innovation and collaboration.
