Salmond reveals £5 million boost for small firms

A RAFT of projects and SMEs in Scotland are to share £4.7 million in European cash funding to create 580 jobs, First Minister Alex Salmond has announced.

The new money comes in the form of new allocations from the European Regional Development Fund to support the Young Innovative Enterprises initiative, the Scottish Enterprise project, and aims to provide assistance to a projects with a view to generating 352 new business start-ups.

Fifteen young technology companies will also share some of the cash.

Salmond, who announced the new measures on a visit to life sciences company Biopta, said the ERDF will invest in programmes that offer advice and assistance to new and small businesses across Scotland.

Biopta, which is a previous recipient of ERDF support, is a provider of specialist human tissue-based research services to the pharmaceutical industry.
