Middlesbrough Council is once again giving businesses the chance to take part in a series of free skills workshops thanks to European funding.

More than £120m is spent each year on goods, works and services – and the council is keen for small and medium sized businesses to become part of the supply chain.

Local company Community Ventures Ltd (CVL) will continue to deliver the range of workshops in partnership with Middlesbrough Council’s Strategic Procurement Team at Middlesbrough Teaching and Learning Centre.

The workshops will help businesses understand the council’s procurement process, where to find opportunities and how to prepare for successful tendering.

Middlesbrough business owner Ann Stonehouse – director of ASK-Consultancy – attended last year’s workshops.

She said: “It is great that the council is investing in the town’s SMEs. Through these workshops we have been given the skills and understanding required to tender for Middlesbrough contracts as well as those with other authorities. With this new found confidence I plan to use the tips and tools learnt during this course and expect to increase my chances of success.”

Cllr Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s executive member for regeneration and economic development, added: “These are difficult times for businesses, but a thriving business community is crucial both to recovery and to Middlesbrough’s on-going regeneration.

“Once again we’re doing our bit to help local enterprises compete for the business that is out there.”
